NEWSFLASH! Can you help?
Nebbi town in the West Nile region of Uganda borders the Democratic
Republic of Congo immediately to the West, and Sudan a little further
North. It has a population of half a million, but many people are
displaced having run from atrocities in their own
neighbourhoods. The majority of the population is
under 15 and illiteracy levels are high (47% in
women and girls), and basic social services are
stretched, with the only hospital in the region
having no medicines and very limited equipment
and staff.
I (Sharon) returned for the second time to these desperate people last November with
Bruce, Lucy and a youth team. While I taught basic health seminars under a mango tree,
my tears joined those of the ladies as they told me that 1 in 8 can expect that either they or
their baby is likely to die in childbirth. There is no antenatal care and no transport if
complications in pregnancy occur.
I made a promise that somehow I would get them a maternity clinic.
To date:
• Eagles Wings has purchased 2 acres of land next to the main road in Nebbi town
• We have received promises of equipment and supplies for the clinic from the U.K.
• The women and townspeople are so excited about having their own clinic they are
getting mobilised to clear the land themselves
• Even the district commissioner is offering his support
The task ahead:
• Clearing the land
• Establishing a water supply
• Establishing a power supply
• Raising funds for the building
• Raising £4000 for the container to ship the equipment
• Recruitment of staff
I would love to hear from anyone who can fund raise or help us accomplish this project in
any way. Equally I would love advice from anyone who has been involved in such a
project before.
